Waiting For a New Home

For years, Kenny slipped through the cracks of the social safety net. As a young child, he was physically, sexually and emotionally abused and neglected, which led to delayed development, chronic illnesses and more. He reads at a third-grade level, despite having obtained a high school diploma, and he’s painfully self-conscious about his situation. On top of that, mental health woes have compounded his problems, and Kenny struggled with housing, transportation, keeping a job and maintaining healthy boundaries and relationships. For 15 years, he was unhoused, but he gets up every day to push back against tragic circumstances and work toward being a productive, and respected, member of society. APTS met Kenny when he reached out for permanent housing assistance, and because we were able to connect him with a trauma-informed case manager and a volunteer mentor, Kenny is doing better than ever, eagerly awaiting his own home while he does all that he can to work on himself and his situation.
